Happy 4 month b-day little man

A friend and his wife recently had a baby (a 10lb, 10oz one at that!) and he and I were comparing New Dad notes this week. I felt like the veteran reassuring the newb that it will all be OK. Actually, that's not true for a lot of reasons. First, I'm not a veteran..yet. Second, I wasn't really reassuring him because it's clear he's got his wits about him and handling this without a problem. It was more like, "Wasn't that approximately the most mind-blowing thing ever and how cool is (fill in the blank)?"

It occurred to me after we talked, though, that we do feel a little bit like we've got this under control. We've got a routine, we know his crys, we know what makes him laugh (addie jumping, being tickled and, as of this week, tape being peeled away from a bottle) and what makes him upset (pinching his pinky finger in his car seat, shots and being scared by a champagne bottle at a restaurant). I wondered before we got into this how long it was going to take to feel like we even remotely knew what we were doing. It didn't just happen one day, but I think we're getting there after four months. I know all you truly crusty veterans out there are raising your eyebrows and admonishing me silently to take it easy on the confidence before the patron saint of screaming babies whacks us with a can of comeuppance tonight. I'm just saying we're four months in, everyone has survived and we're still talking to each other.

As we said in our earlier post, Henry is growing quite well. He fit easily in a 12 month outfit today, so I think he'll just go with a diaper this summer to avoid having to buy clothes that don't fit. We're really enjoying the nice weather and already thinking about getting a backpack rig to bring him on longer walks/hikes. We didn't get him a cupcake or nuthin' for his 4 month birthday. He has been eyeing us when we eat lately, but he still wouldn't have known what to do with it. We'll make it up to you, Hank, and visit our favorite bakeries later.
